We received a query from the client for this project after they read an article in Dwell Magazine on our Shirley Road project.  They had purchased a small lot in northwestern East Hampton and were about to purchase a stock contemporary prefab home to place on the site.  While their understanding of modern prefab construction led them to believe that they would have to choose a stock plan and suffer through the limited–and sometimes rather sad– options in terms of finishes and design we believed that we could offer them a better value by adapting our Type-2 hybrid construction system.  The Type-2 LABhaus system was developed to provide a high-end prefab system for second-floor bedrooms and an open-span main living area with 10-12 foot high ceilings and loft-like living spaces.

The resulting 3.5 Bedroom 2.5 Bath retreat for the client and their extended family is anchored around a loft-like first floor gathering space set between an over-sized fireplace and massive south-facing slighting doors centered on the pool. The overhanging second floor provides protected outdoor space and seasonal shading for the south- and west-facing walls of glass.  Free-standing landscape screens provide privacy from the street for the outdoor dining room and privacy for the outdoor shower. The upstairs offers a luxurious master suite, two guest bedrooms, a family room and a flexible office/sleeping pod.

The end result is a lush, expansive, and energy efficient custom home which we hope will offer substantially greater enjoyment, provide a much greater return on investment, and be seen as a brilliant decision in years to come.
